The Benedictine Abbey of Melk
We stopped at Melk Abbey on our way to Vienna -- a fantastic way to break up the trip. The Abbey, overlooking the Danube, is famous for its library, with thousands of rare books and manuscripts, and its stunning church (photography not allowed, unfortunately). The church has the most opulent interior I've ever seen. Not a square inch was left undecorated. The guided tour our group went on certainly left me wanting to come back for a more thorough investigation of the gardens, the Abbey, the church, and the town.

The town below the Abbey is worth exploring if you have the time.
