Hallstatt is wedged between a mountain and a lake, leaving very little room for a cemetery.
Starting in 1720, graves were opened every 10-20 years to make room for newcomers.
The Charnel House sits below St. Michael's Chapel by the Catholic church. It contains about 1,200 skulls, 610 of which are painted
(I counted about 500 visible skulls).
The skulls were cleaned, painted with names, dates, and other symbols, and placed in the Charnel House. Oak leaves = glory, laurel = victory, ivy = life, roses = love, a snake = death.
